At the close of 2020, Mike Tyson and Jake Paul appeared on the same fight card. Today marks five years since “Iron Mike” returned to the ring after more than a decade away. Tyson’s comeback was showcased in an exhibition match against fellow boxing great Roy Jones Jr., headlining the Triller event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Along with these legends, Jake Paul, the polarizing figure, competed against former NBA player Nate Robinson in his second professional boxing match before the main event.

Jake Paul has since emerged as a central figure in the crossover boxing surge, headlining major events. Due to Tyson’s return spotlight, Paul took a co-main event role but still made a strong impression by knocking out Robinson in the second round, showcasing his power to MMA fans. Although traditional boxing purists remain skeptical of celebrity boxing, Tyson recognized the value fighters like Paul bring to the sport, helping to revive boxing’s popularity amidst UFC’s growing dominance. Tyson stated that boxing must respect YouTube stars, acknowledging their role in keeping the sport vibrant. Their connection continued with a notable, high-viewership bout in 2024, marking Netflix’s entrance into boxing promotion.

Paul’s journey after defeating Robinson involved taking on top MMA fighters like Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Nate Diaz, building a credible record. Critics have long called for Paul to face a legitimate boxing contender, which will come on December 19th in Miami. Paul is set to fight Anthony Joshua, a former two-time unified heavyweight champion, after Paul’s scheduled bout with Gervonta Davis was canceled due to legal issues surrounding Davis. Given Joshua’s pedigree and remaining prime condition, UFC President Dana White and others anticipate that this fight might finally deliver Paul’s first knockout defeat.
