Skeletons Snatch Newberry Gold in a Heart-Stopping Panic Attack Victory

Dan Skelton found relief from recent disappointments as Panic Attack delivered an impressive victory in the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury. Despite a dip in morale following New Lion’s fall at the Fighting Fifth in Newcastle, Skelton turned his attention south where Tristan Darrell rode the filly in one of the season’s most significant handicaps.

Panic Attack, making a rapid return after winning the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham just over two weeks earlier, competed over a longer distance of three miles and two furlongs for the first time as a 16-1 outsider. In a large field of 24 runners, the filly thrived under Darrell’s confident riding, showing strong stamina and excellent jumping to secure a six-and-a-half-length win ahead of Three Card Bragg, with The Changing Man finishing third.

Skelton praised Darrell’s performance, highlighting his rider’s growth in confidence, saying, “He gave her a great ride. Fair play to Tristan. We had faith in him. He’s matured as a rider in a way no other has under my guidance, thanks to the right instructions from Harry (Skelton) and our support.” He also commented on the filly’s remarkable endurance, noting she finished strongly despite using a lot of energy in the closing stages — an impressive feat given the short turnaround since her last race.

The last horse to achieve a similar double in major races was Celestial Gold, trained by Martin Pipe in 2004. Skelton reflected on this rarity, saying, “Celestial Gold did it, but I was lying in bed recently thinking he was the only one. Now we’re two!” He also mentioned conversations with owner Brian Drew about the filly’s development and the positive progress leading up to this success.

Fan Take: This thrilling win by Panic Attack highlights the excitement and unpredictability of horse racing, especially when a horse conquers challenging conditions and distances swiftly after a previous victory. For fans, it showcases the skill of both horse and rider, underscoring the sport’s blend of strategy, training, and tenacity that keeps audiences captivated.
