Islanders’ Kyle Palmieri Faces 6-8 Month Hiatus Following Knee Injury

The New York Islanders announced on Sunday that forward Kyle Palmieri will be out for six to eight months due to a knee injury requiring surgery. The 34-year-old player suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee after a collision with Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale and an awkward fall into the boards during the second period of Friday’s game against Philadelphia at UBS Arena.

Despite the injury, Palmieri managed to steal the puck from a Flyers defender and earned a secondary assist on Emil Heineman’s goal. This season, Palmieri has tallied six goals and twelve assists in 25 games. He joined the Islanders in April 2021 after being traded from New Jersey and had maintained a streak of 223 consecutive games with the team before the injury.

Originally drafted in the first round by Anaheim in 2009, Palmieri has appeared in 925 regular-season contests for the Ducks, Devils, and Islanders, accumulating 276 goals and 269 assists throughout his career.

The Islanders are also dealing with other injury setbacks, having lost defenseman Alexander Romanov to a severe shoulder injury earlier this month, while forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau is sidelined with an upper-body injury. New York, currently holding a 13-9-3 record, is set to face Washington on Sunday.

Fan Take: Palmieri’s injury is a significant blow to the Islanders, removing a key contributor from the lineup and testing the team’s depth. For hockey fans, this highlights the physical toll the sport takes on players and underscores the challenges teams face in maintaining competitive rosters through injury-plagued seasons.
