  • Mikel Arteta talks about William Saliba
  • Saliba’s importance to Arsenal

Arsenal remained top of the Premier League with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but the big story was the unexpected absence of defensive star William Saliba.

The French centre-back was ruled out just hours before kick-off, with Mikel Arteta already ruled out with Saliba and regular partner Gabriel Magalhães sidelined.

As a result, the Gunners have been forced into a completely new combination, with summer signings Pierro Hincapie and Cristian Mosquera stepping into the heart of the defense.

Mikel Arteta talks about William Saliba

Speaking after the match, Arteta revealed that the club had chosen not to take any risks as Saliba had felt discomfort the day before the match.

Arteta said:

“He seemed uncomfortable yesterday so we need to investigate a bit more what happened. I don’t think it’s anything serious, but it’s enough to keep him out of the game.”

Saliba returned to the team in 2022 and has barely appeared in any Premier League matches since then as a central figure. Gabriel is already expected to be out for several weeks, with Arsenal looking to avoid a long-term absence for their star defender.

As the festival period approaches, leaders face their toughest demographic challenge of the season.

A reliable source said Saliba will undergo tests tomorrow to better assess the nature of his injury.

Saliba’s importance to Arsenal

Saliba’s value to Arsenal’s backline cannot be overstated. Since forming one of the Premier League’s most commanding defensive partnerships with Gabriel, his combination of blistering speed, tactical intelligence and calm composure has been the cornerstone of Arsenal’s title challenge.

The France international is more than just a tackler. His ability to bring the ball in from the back and consistently make the right passing decisions even under pressure is crucial in initiating Arsenal’s attacking transitions.

His pace is particularly important, allowing the team’s full-backs to push higher up the pitch and the midfield to press aggressively, confident that Saliba can cover the spaces behind.

His absence, especially alongside Gabriel, deprives the team of a key defensive and forward spine, and the upcoming scan will undoubtedly be the most important news for the Gunners faithful this week.
