Cooper Flagg Lights Up the Court with 35 Points, Shattering a LeBron James NBA Scoring Record

Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, set a new record by becoming the youngest player in league history to score at least 35 points in a game during the Mavericks’ 114-100 victory over the Clippers. At 18 years and 343 days old, he surpassed LeBron James’ previous mark by five days. Flagg shot efficiently, hitting 13 of 22 attempts (59.1%) while contributing eight rebounds and two assists, and he aggressively scored 21 points in the first half alone.

Despite facing lackluster defense from the Clippers, who rank 26th defensively and are on a four-game losing streak, Flagg showcased remarkable composure, especially with clutch plays in the final two minutes that helped seal the victory for Dallas. His performance marks a significant breakthrough, solidifying his place as a key rookie contender even as Charlotte’s Con Knuppel leads rookie scoring and overall stats. Over the last five games, Flagg has averaged more than 20 points, with improved shooting efficiency and increased rebounds and assists, outperforming Knuppel’s recent numbers.

A strategic shift by the Mavericks, including benching D’Angelo Russell and adjusting the lineup to better utilize Flagg, has led to these improved performances. While his three-point shooting remains a developing skill, Flagg has become more effective inside the arc. His recent surge in productivity suggests he could be a serious challenger to Knuppel for Rookie of the Year, especially as Charlotte’s lineup stabilizes with the return of key players like Brandon Miller.

Flagg’s slow start to the season left him overlooked among rookies, but his recent strong finishes indicate his true potential. The Rookie of the Year race now seems poised to be a battle between two former Duke teammates, adding an exciting narrative to the NBA’s young talent story.
