Charles Oliveira Reflects on Paddy Pimblett Clash and Points Out Justin Gaethje’s Weaknesses

Charles Oliveira recently shared his perspective on the interim lightweight title bout set to headline UFC 324. The event marks the first numbered UFC card on Paramount+ and will feature Paddy Pimblett facing Justin Gaethje for the interim lightweight championship on January 24th. Despite some fan criticism of this matchup, it remains a highly anticipated clash. Interestingly, Oliveira might also have been involved on the same night, hinted by a social media post that was shortly deleted. Having defeated Gaethje in 2022, Oliveira expressed his thoughts on the fight, casting doubt on the title bout’s dynamics.

Justin Gaethje, known as “The Highlight,” promised an unforgettable return at UFC 324. Since debuting in 2017, he’s been a top contender in the lightweight division, while Pimblett has risen as one of the sport’s biggest stars recently. Their fight showcases contrasting fighting styles, something Oliveira emphasized in an interview with Orjal da Ruta. Oliveira praised Pimblett’s mobility and well-rounded skills but warned about Gaethje’s striking power. He predicted Pimblett would likely avoid striking exchanges, aiming to take Gaethje to the ground where he might have a better shot at victory. Still, Oliveira admitted he’d like to see Gaethje win.

Oliveira, who recently beat Mateusz Gamrot, noted that Pimblett’s agile and persistent approach could lead to him capturing the championship if he successfully uses grappling. He also acknowledged Gaethje’s toughness and striking but pointed out vulnerabilities on the ground that Pimblett could exploit.

Regarding the division’s current state, Oliveira criticized the decision to grant the interim title shot to Pimblett instead of Arman Tsarukyan, who had previously beaten him in a title eliminator at UFC 300. Oliveira believes Tsarukyan was the more deserving contender for the interim title opportunity.

Fan Take: This insight from Oliveira adds depth to the ongoing debate about UFC matchmaking and title shots, highlighting the complexities behind fighter rankings and styles. For fans, these candid opinions underscore the intrigue and unpredictability that keep the lightweight division one of the sport’s most exciting and competitive arenas.
