Jimmie Johnson Set to Take on NASCAR’s Exciting New San Diego Street Race

Over the weekend of June 19-21, NASCAR will host its three national series on a brand-new track located at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, marking the first-ever NASCAR race on an active military base. This landmark event will showcase seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and California native Jimmie Johnson, who will race the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE, backed by Carvana, around the 5.4-mile road course.

Johnson, co-owner of Legacy Motor Club, expressed his excitement about finally racing in his hometown, a place he never imagined NASCAR would race due to logistical challenges. He highlighted how meaningful it is to compete in front of his local community, military personnel, family, and friends, calling the experience a lifelong dream and a full-circle moment, especially as his grandparents are buried nearby at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Since stepping back from full-time racing, Johnson has continued to participate in prestigious events like the Daytona 24, Le Mans 24, and the Indianapolis 500, even swapping rides with Fernando Alonso in a Formula 1 car. Recently turning 50, Johnson has maintained a part-time presence in the Cup Series as a team owner, notably finishing third in the 2025 Daytona 500 and making his 700th career start in the Coca-Cola 600, although that race ended prematurely for him.

Fan Take: This groundbreaking race at an active military base not only honors the service community but also brings NASCAR closer to new and diverse fans in San Diego. For the sport, it’s a bold step in expanding its footprint and creating unique, memorable racing experiences that connect deeply with riders like Jimmie Johnson and the wider racing community.
