Top 3 Trade Destinations for Diamondbacks 2B Ketel Marte: Tigers, Mariners, or Surprise Team?

Ketel Marte, a top-performing second baseman in his prime with a favorable contract, represents a valuable asset for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite a tough season where Arizona missed the playoffs and became sellers at the trade deadline, Marte, a switch-hitter and two-time Silver Slugger, is likely to be a sought-after player this offseason. Here are the three best trade options for Marte among playoff-caliber teams.

The Boston Red Sox are close to contending but need an extra boost, and Marte could provide that depth. With 10 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) at second base in 2024, Marte offers versatility, able to play second base, shortstop, or center field. At 32 years old, with a $92 million contract over five years and a player option for 2031, he would strengthen Boston’s double-play pairing alongside Trevor Story. Marte’s strong offensive skills would complement Boston’s young talent, potentially matching the league’s top teams like the Blue Jays and Yankees. Boston might trade prospects such as Mikey Romero, Hunter Dobbins, and Joe Stinkson Garcia to acquire him, though they may prefer to develop some of their homegrown middle infielders.

A return to the Seattle Mariners, where Marte started his MLB career, is also a possibility. The Mariners, who narrowly missed the World Series, need stability at second base, a position that saw much turnover last season. Marte’s clutch postseason performance and ability to boost an already powerful Mariners lineup could be crucial. Seattle might offer prospects like Cole Young and Emerson Hancock, but they might also prioritize re-signing other infielders, which could complicate their pursuit of Marte.

Lastly, the Detroit Tigers could benefit greatly from trading for Marte. Though Gleyber Torres performed well, Marte would be an upgrade, especially offensively, allowing Detroit to focus on other free agent targets. The Tigers showed promise last season, but they need more to become a legitimate contender. Marte could be the key player, and Detroit might offer a package including Max Clark and Colt Keith to make the deal happen.

Marte would be an excellent addition to any team trading for him, but particularly for Detroit, where his presence could turn them into serious World Series contenders.

Fan Take: This potential trade reshapes the competitive landscape in MLB, giving teams a chance to boost their lineup with a versatile star. For baseball fans, Marte’s moves signal exciting shifts that could redefine playoff races and set the stage for dramatic postseason battles.
