Immanuel Quickley simply wanted his opportunity. The young point guard provided a spark off the bench during his first four seasons with the Knicks, finishing in the top 10 for Sixth Man of the Year voting twice. However, as a significant contract loomed, New York chose to trade him away.

Quickley was sent to the Raptors nearly two years ago in a deal that also involved teammates RJ Barrett and Anunoby. Since then, the 26-year-old has capitalized on his chance. Despite dealing with some injuries, he secured a starting role in Toronto, averaging 17.0 points and 5.2 assists during his initial season and a half with the team. This season, he has stayed healthy and is maintaining solid stats with 16.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.6 rebounds per game over the first 21 games.

Though some may be surprised by Quickley’s development, his former teammates are not. Jalen Brunson praised Quickley’s work ethic and dedication, saying his progress is no surprise, and expressed respect and support for him. Quickley impressed the MSG crowd upon his return to New York, nearly achieving a double-double with 19 points and 8 assists on 50% shooting. He is set to face Brunson and the Knicks again in the upcoming NBA Cup quarterfinals.

Fan Take: This story highlights the importance of opportunity and perseverance in the NBA, showing how a change of scenery can unlock a player’s potential. Basketball fans should watch Quickley’s growth closely, as it underscores the evolving talent and competitiveness in the league, impacting team dynamics and fan excitement.
