Porta Fortuna and Barnabas Take Center Stage at Tattersalls, Sparking Excitement

At the Tattersalls December Filly Sale in Newmarket on Tuesday, multi-Group 1 winner Porta Fortuna was purchased by MV Magnier for 4.5 million guineas. Trained by Donnacha O’Brien, the filly has earned victories in the Albany and Coronation Stakes, and also performed strongly in the Cheveley Park Stakes, Falmouth Stakes, and Matron Stakes.

This season, she has raced only once, triumphing in the Group 2 Runways Stud Stakes at Curragh in May. MV Magnier praised her as a highly talented and high-quality filly, expressing hope that they can breed mares of similar caliber. There is a strong possibility she will be paired with Star-Spangled Banner.

Porta Fortuna briefly held the title of the most expensive filly sold in training this year, until Jessica Harrington’s opera-winning filly Barnavaara was sold to Sugar Whiskey Trading for 4.8 million guineas. Harrington remarked on Barnavaara’s development and potential despite some challenges earlier in the season.

In another major sale, Sun Chariot winner Tanjuana, ridden by jockey David Menuzier, was sold to Magnier for 2.6 million guineas.

Fan Take: This headline-grabbing sale highlights the intense demand for exceptional fillies in the racing world, underscoring how top-tier talent continues to command record prices. For fans, it signals the ongoing excitement and investment in breeding future champions, which keeps the sport dynamic and highly competitive.
