West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta was sent off in a recent Premier League game against Liverpool.
The Brazilian star was given his marching orders after an altercation with officials over the first yellow card he received during the match.
Despite being told to calm down, the Brazilian continued to argue with officials and was eventually shown a second yellow card.
The player will miss the important match against Manchester United. His antics have been criticized and it has cost the team a lot.
Bowen defends Lucas Paqueta
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen jumped to his teammate’s defense, explaining that Paqueta had been passionate during the match and was unhappy with the first booking. He further added that as the team captain, he should have done better to defuse the situation and control his players.
“Obviously Lucas is passionate and he was frustrated about it. He’s trying to talk to the referee but at the same time Lucas is in his ear,” Bowen told West Ham’s website.
“Maybe I could have done more to help Lucas. But in that situation, I think Lucas was obviously really passionate about his emotions and I probably wouldn’t be able to calm him down…”
“But things like this happen all the time in football. They could have handled it a little better and helped Lucas, but I thought he was trying to talk to the referee to make sure he understood why he got the first yellow card.”
Jarrod Bowen was a selfless man.
Although Bowen’s captaincy has been questioned, he continues to show himself to be a selfless leader and is willing to take responsibility for the actions of his teammates.
It will be interesting to see if Paqueta can improve his aggression and control himself in situations like this. West Ham are fighting for survival and cannot afford to lose any of their key players.
The Brazilian is an essential asset for them and his suspension could be very costly for the London club.
