Clippers Bid Farewell to Veteran Chris Paul, Ending His Final Season with an Early Homecoming from Road Trip

Chris Paul’s tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers has come to an end. Paul shared on his Instagram Story that the team sent him home late Tuesday night during a five-game road trip. The Clippers are currently in Atlanta ahead of their game against the Hawks on Wednesday night.

The Clippers officially announced early Wednesday that they have parted ways with Paul, though the specifics of the separation remain undisclosed. Clippers President Lawrence Frank stated, “We have parted ways with Chris and he is no longer with the team. We look forward to supporting him in the next steps of his career.”

Frank also emphasized Paul’s legendary status with the franchise, saying, “Chris is a historic Clipper who had a remarkable career. Let’s be clear: Chris is not to blame for our struggles. We take full responsibility for our performance issues, which stem from various factors. We appreciate all that Chris has done for our franchise.”

Paul is set to start his 21st and final NBA season this fall. He joined the Clippers this offseason on a one-year, $3.6 million deal, reuniting with a team where he previously spent six seasons. At the time, he described returning to the Clippers as a “natural” decision.

Throughout his career, Paul has played for seven different teams and earned 12 All-Star selections. He has led the league in assists five times and in steals six times. Despite never winning a championship, his legacy as a future Hall of Famer and one of the greatest point guards in NBA history is undisputed.

This season, the 40-year-old averaged 2.9 points and 3.3 assists per game, mostly coming off the bench for only the second time in his career. In Monday’s loss against the Miami Heat, he contributed eight points and three assists in 15 minutes.

The Clippers are struggling badly this season, holding a 5-16 record—the second-worst in the Western Conference behind the New Orleans Pelicans. They have lost five straight games and eight of their last nine.

The team appears to be making moves to change its fortunes, but Paul’s unexpected departure puts a sudden cloud over the final chapter of his illustrious career.

Fan Take: Chris Paul’s departure from the Clippers signals a significant shift not only for the team but also for the NBA landscape, as one of the game’s all-time greats winds down his career in a surprising way. For basketball fans, this moment highlights the unpredictable nature of team dynamics and how even legends can face abrupt changes, reinforcing the ongoing evolution of the sport.
