Blue Jays Bring Back Right-Hander Cody Ponce: Key Details on His MLB Return After Thriving in South Korea

The Toronto Blue Jays have finalized a deal with free agent starting pitcher Cody Ponce, signing him to a three-year contract valued at $30 million, as reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. This signing marks the second starting pitcher acquisition for the Blue Jays in the past week, following the announcement of Dylan Cease’s seven-year contract worth $210 million, the largest free agent contract in the franchise’s history.

Ponce, 31, has not pitched in Major League Baseball since 2021. Last season, he played for the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), starting 29 games with a remarkable 1.89 ERA and an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.15. CBS Sports previously ranked him as the 45th best pitcher available, noting his high-90s fastball and quality splitter. His successful transition back to the U.S. leagues could follow the footsteps of other pitchers who moved from KBO to MLB, such as Merrill Kelly and Chris Flexen.

The Blue Jays now boast a surplus of starting pitchers, including Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber—who declined his opt-out clause to stay—and notable rookies like Trey Yesavage and Jose Berrios. With additional arms like Beauden Francis and Eric Lauer, Toronto has more talented starters than available rotation spots. This depth offers flexibility for trades, bullpen moves, and injury backups, a luxury the team lacked last year when they had to scramble for replacements due to injuries.

In addition to bolstering their starting rotation, the Blue Jays still face questions regarding their bullpen and shortstop position. They aim to improve their relief pitching quality, being linked to several high-leverage relievers including Pete Fairbanks. The team must also decide whether to re-sign free agent Bo Bichette, promote an internal candidate, or acquire a new shortstop from outside the organization. Without much buzz around Bichette ahead of the winter meetings, the simplest option might be shifting Andres Jimenez to shortstop and Ernie Clement to second base.

Fan Take: This flurry of moves shows the Blue Jays’ determination to build a powerhouse pitching staff, underscoring the increasing value of depth and versatility in today’s game. For baseball fans, it signals an exciting era for the Blue Jays and highlights the growing trend of successful player transitions between international leagues and MLB.
