Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in signing Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge.
The 21-year-old central defender has been impressing in Belgium and is attracting the attention of top teams. According to a report from Boravip, Liverpool have sent scouts to keep an eye on the player, but have not yet made a decision on a potential transfer.
It will be interesting to see if Liverpool offer to sign the defender in January. They need more depth in their defense and the Ecuadorian would be a solid long-term signing.
Ordonez has performed well in Belgium and has the physical and technical ability to play well in English football. He could settle in quickly and help Liverpool tighten up at the back.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are also interested in the player. It remains to be seen whether they will take over their interest and make a formal offer to complete the deal. The Belgian club will demand around 40 million euros for the player.
Chelsea and Liverpool certainly have the financial wherewithal to pay his asking price. At 21 years old, he is very young and could justify investing in his future. He has the qualities to develop into a top-class defender in the Premier League and could be an asset for both clubs.
Liverpool have looked vulnerable at the back this season and need to strengthen their defense if they want to win big trophies. Meanwhile, Chelsea are struggling with multiple injury problems in their defence. Both teams are in need of quality central defenders and the South American certainly fits that profile.
If the 21-year-old can adapt quickly to English football, a €40 million investment could look like a bargain in the future.
