Rival squads caution Williams to ‘stay alert’ following bold ‘Mercedes-level’ assertions

F1 icon Juan Pablo Montoya has warned that rival teams should be cautious of Williams in the upcoming 2026 season. Williams finished fifth in the 2025 Constructors’ Championship, bolstered by Carlos Sainz securing his second podium of the year. Sainz showcased strong performances in the latter part of the season, including a third-place finish in Qatar ahead of competitors Kimi Antonelli and Lando Norris. Although Williams stopped developing their car early, they still managed to stay ahead of other midfield teams in the standings. Sainz earned his first podium with Williams in Azerbaijan before improving on that result in Qatar.

Under James Vowles’ leadership, Williams has experienced a significant turnaround. Vowles has emphasized that their main goal is to build competitiveness for 2026 and 2027, regarding their 2025 achievements as a bonus. Montoya commended Williams and Vowles, highlighting Vowles’ previous success as Mercedes’ chief strategist during the team’s dominant era and suggesting he is aiming to elevate Williams to Mercedes’ level. Montoya stated after the Qatar GP that Vowles and the team are fully committed to transformation, aligning their approach with the precision and teamwork seen at Mercedes. He emphasized that if Williams indeed has a competitive car next year, other teams must be wary.

Despite their best championship result since 2017, Vowles admits Williams is still far from winning a title. The team last tasted championship glory with Jacques Villeneuve in the 1990s and hasn’t had a car capable of regularly competing for race wins since the early 2000s. Vowles commented after clinching fifth place that while mathematically their championship hopes are over for now, their progress has surpassed expectations. He expressed hope that their efforts will become apparent and reaffirmed their ambition to eventually win a title, acknowledging the long journey ahead. Looking forward, Mercedes is anticipated to unveil a powerful power unit in 2026, which could further accelerate Williams’ rise.

Fan Take: This update is exciting for racing fans as it signals a potential resurgence of Williams, a historic F1 team, into true championship contenders. If Williams can continue their upward trajectory with strong leadership and Mercedes power, it could shake up the competitive landscape and add fresh excitement to the sport.
