A life-sized World Cup soccer trophy has been constructed using 2,842 Lego bricks. On Wednesday, Lego announced a collaboration with FIFA to introduce the brand’s inaugural World Cup series next year.

This Lego rendition of the trophy, first revealed at the 1974 World Cup, stands at 36.8 centimeters (14 1/2 inches) tall, identical in size to the original. However, unlike the original trophy made of 18-carat gold and malachite, the Lego version is crafted from plastic, making it much lighter than the original’s 6.175 kilograms (13.6 pounds).

Slated for release in March at a price of $200, it features a “hidden scene accessible through a pull-out flap in the top globe,” according to a Lego statement. FIFA maintains possession of the original trophy in Zurich.

The upcoming 48-team Men’s World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, is set to kick off on June 11.

This news matters to soccer fans as it highlights the intersection of sports and creativity, making the World Cup more accessible in a fun and innovative way. The initiative also builds excitement for the tournament itself, creating a unique collectible that fans can engage with in a fresh manner.
