Manny Pacquiao Overcomes Early Struggles to Land Devastating KO and Claim First World Title

Manny Pacquiao’s historic journey in boxing began 27 years ago today. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest fighters, the Filipino icon made history by becoming the only boxer to capture 12 world titles across eight different weight divisions. Over a remarkable 30-year career, Pacquiao secured lineal championships in four weight classes and is on track to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2025. His rise to prominence kicked off with his 25th professional bout, which was his first opportunity to fight for a world title, though the early days were challenging for the then-aspiring star.

On December 4, 1998, a 19-year-old Pacquiao, relatively unknown at the time, won his very first world championship by knocking out Chachai Sasakul to claim the WBC flyweight title. The bout took place in Thailand, Sasakul’s home country, where the local champion was undefeated in his last 13 fights and had already defended his belt twice. Despite trailing on all scorecards after seven rounds, Pacquiao capitalized on Sasakul’s fatigue, landing a series of powerful punches, including a decisive left that knocked Sasakul down and secured Pacquiao’s first world title. This victory marked the beginning of an unprecedented career where Pacquiao would go on to win titles across weight classes spanning nearly 40 pounds.

Fast forward 27 years, Pacquiao continues to make waves in boxing. After a return to the ring in 2025 following a four-year hiatus since his loss to Yordenis Ugas, Pacquiao fought WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a 12-round draw, coming close to reclaiming a title. At 46, Pacquiao plans to keep fighting into 2026, aiming for a dramatic rematch against Floyd Mayweather—their first meeting dubbed the “Fight of the Century.” Reports suggest Mayweather, now 48, is also preparing to return for what would be Pacquiao’s 51st professional fight. Streaming giant Netflix is rumored to be involved in promoting the potential event, following their upcoming boxing event featuring Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua.

Fan Take: This milestone is huge for fight fans because it reminds us of Pacquiao’s legendary resilience and adaptability through decades. The potential Mayweather rematch promises to reignite one of boxing’s most captivating rivalries, offering both nostalgia and fresh excitement that could push the sport to new heights.
