Lionel Messi Keeps World Cup Aspirations Under Wraps as 2026 Approaches

Lionel Messi has not yet confirmed his participation in the 2026 World Cup. The 38-year-old star led Argentina to a top finish in the South American qualifiers but remains uncertain about his role in defending their 2022 title. The World Cup draw is scheduled for Friday.

In an interview with ESPN Argentina, Messi shared, “I’m going to take it one day at a time, be honest, be realistic and try to feel good. This year has been really good.” Playing in the U.S. may make it easier for him to consider competing in a tournament jointly hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, which kicks off on June 11 and will be Messi’s sixth World Cup.

He noted that the current season is challenging in Europe, with a demanding pre-season beginning in January and a busy schedule ahead, including league matches and the CONCACAF Champions League. Messi and Inter Miami are preparing for the MLS Cup final against Vancouver this Saturday.

Should he qualify for the World Cup, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who has recently secured Portugal’s spot, would surpass legends like Germany’s Lothar Matthäus, who participated in five tournaments. Messi mentioned that he is in regular communication with Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, discussing his potential role on the team. “He always asks me to take whatever position he gives me. We have a very trusting relationship,” Messi explained.

Fan Take: Messi’s potential participation in the upcoming World Cup is significant for soccer fans around the globe, as it could mark a historic milestone in his illustrious career. His presence on the field not only electrifies matches but also elevates the sport’s profile, attracting even more interest in the beautiful game.
