Woodbine Entertainment mourns the loss of Mike Doyle, a revered trainer and Hall of Fame jockey who was a pillar of the Woodbine horse racing community for many years. Doyle’s influence on horse racing and the many individuals who had the fortune to work alongside him will leave a lasting legacy.

Michael Copeland, CEO of Woodbine Entertainment, expressed heartfelt condolences to Doyle’s family, friends, and the racing community, emphasizing Doyle’s significant contributions to the sport and his enduring passion that inspired many. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Doyle developed a strong connection with horses early in life, mastering various disciplines including training jumpers and racehorses while still in school.

After relocating to Canada, Doyle began his career at Gardiner Farms and later worked with trainer Jim Bentley at Woodbine. In 1978, he became a trainer for George Frostad’s Botech stable and celebrated his first win that year. Doyle’s career highlights include purchasing the exceptional mare Bessarabian in 1984, a move that earned him the Sovereign Award for Outstanding Trainer.

His legacy includes breeding multiple champions like the 1989 Canadian Oaks winner Blondina Motel, Wavering Girl, and 1993 U.S. Triple Crown contender Wild Gale, who placed third in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Doyle was also part of the team that won the Queen’s Plate in 1994 with Basquian.

Returning to full-time training in 1997, Doyle achieved numerous victories with longtime assistant Brent Harris. A milestone came on October 25, 2014, when Doyle secured his 1,000th career win aboard Evangeline’s Hope at Woodbine. In August, he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, capping a career with 1,178 wins, including 29 stakes victories, and over $44 million in prize earnings.
