Can the Bucks Endure the Season Without Giannis Antetokounmpo?

The wider basketball community may be speculating about the future of the Milwaukee Bucks without Giannis Antetokounmpo, but coach Doc Rivers and his team have more urgent concerns—figuring out how to compete effectively without their star player. Shortly after rumors surfaced that Giannis and his agent were discussing his potential departure, the two-time NBA MVP was injured early in the Bucks’ game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday. He left the court cautiously and did not return after heading to the locker room.

Given that the injury was non-contact, some fans feared a severe issue, but an MRI later revealed a right calf strain. While the Bucks have not disclosed his return date, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that Giannis is anticipated to be out for 2 to 4 weeks. Although this is a relief compared to a catastrophic injury, the team may choose to be cautious and extend his recovery time.

The Bucks’ schedule means that even a two-week absence costs Giannis five games, and four weeks would mean missing 12 games. Having already missed six games this season, Giannis won’t meet the minimum 65-game requirement to qualify for major individual honors, which would be a significant blow. He’s been a consistent top contender for MVP, All-NBA, and Defensive Player of the Year accolades for years.

So far this season, Giannis is having possibly the best start of his career, ranking fourth in the league in scoring and displaying elite efficiency and playmaking. He creates a high percentage of his teammates’ scoring opportunities, and his inside scoring prowess remains unmatched. On defense, he significantly restricts opponents’ scoring at the rim, and his presence greatly impacts the Bucks’ performance, with the team outscoring opponents by 8.5 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor, compared to being outscored by 10.4 points per 100 without him.

The Bucks face a stark contrast in results: a team capable of 60 wins with Giannis and struggling with just 18 wins without him. How they adjust is crucial. They can try to replicate their recent success by increasing shot creation from guards like Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr., who combined for 48 points and 15 assists in Wednesday’s win. Both players excel at driving to the basket, which could compensate for the lack of Giannis’ inside attack, and shooters like AJ Green will need more support in creating open looks.

Milwaukee might also increase reliance on 3-point shooting and spread the floor more to offset Giannis’ absence. This was evident when the Bucks hit 44 three-pointers in a recent game without him. Role players such as Green, Gary Trent Jr., Myles Turner, and Bobby Portis, alongside reserves like Jericho Sims, who showed promise off the bench, could play bigger roles to help stabilize the team.

Coach Rivers acknowledged the team’s struggles and believes improvement will quiet the ongoing speculation about Giannis’ future. The Bucks have a manageable next 10-game stretch with some home games against strong opponents and road games against less formidable teams. This period will be critical for Rollins, Porter Jr., and others to prove they can maintain competitiveness and potentially step up as secondary stars.

There remains uncertainty whether the talks about Giannis leaving are real or a product of the team’s early-season struggles. However, teammates like Green have expressed confidence that the team will rally behind Giannis and vice versa.

Fan Take: Giannis Antetokounmpo’s injury and potential contract uncertainty highlight a pivotal moment for the Bucks and NBA fans alike. How Milwaukee manages without their superstar could reshape the team’s identity and impact the league’s competitive balance, underscoring the significance of star players in today’s NBA.
