2026 World Cup Draw: How Erling Haaland and Norway Will Shape the Fiercest Group of Death

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will host 48 nations, marking a historic high for the 96-year-old tournament. Consequently, the talent will be spread across 12 groups rather than the traditional 8.

Notably, Norway, featuring star player Erling Haaland, is expected to be in the formidable “death group.”

During the UEFA World Cup qualifiers, Norway achieved an impressive record of 8 wins and no losses; however, they are currently ranked 29th by FIFA, placing them in pot 3 for the upcoming draw set for Friday.

Landon Donovan, a legend of the U.S. men’s national team, remarked on FOX Sports’ World Cup Draw Preview show that Norway is significantly stronger than other teams in pot 3, describing them as being just shy of pot 1. Their recent performance has not yet been fully reflected in their ranking, despite their evident talent.

Erling Haaland leads the Norwegian squad and wrapped up qualifying with 16 goals, tying the record for the most goals scored in a World Cup qualifying campaign, previously set by Robert Lewandowski of Poland in 2018. The nearest competitor, Austria’s Marko Arnautovic, managed only 8 goals.

Donovan emphasized the challenges of facing a player like Haaland, noting that being pitted against him one-on-one at the World Cup is a daunting prospect.

Supporting Haaland is a talented roster often referred to as Norway’s “golden generation,” as noted by U.S. soccer great Cobi Jones.

Jones highlighted the prowess of Norwegian wingers Antonio Nusa and Oscar Bobb, known for their dribbling skills, as well as Martin Ødegaard’s outstanding left foot, indicating a solid overall team.

While some teams in pot 2 might seem like favorable matchups, the presence of Norway in pot 3 should be a cause for concern for any competitor.

Viewers can tune in for the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, starting at 11:30 a.m. ET on FOX.

Fan Take: This development is crucial for soccer fans as it introduces a new level of competition, reshaping how teams strategize against rising stars like Haaland. The prospect of facing a well-rounded Norwegian squad heightens the excitement for the tournament, promising thrilling matches ahead.
