The Boston Red Sox finalized a five-player trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night, acquiring right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo. Alongside Oviedo, Boston also received left-handed pitcher Tyler Samaniego and minor league catcher Adonis Guzman, while sending outfielder Jostinkson Garcia and minor league right-handed pitcher Jesus Travieso to Pittsburgh.

Oviedo, 27, who hails from Cuba, is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in December 2023 and is expected to miss the entire 2024 season. Last year, he pitched in nine games with a 2-1 record and a 3.57 ERA. During the 2023 season, Oviedo started 32 games for the Pirates, achieving a 9-14 record with a 4.31 ERA and 158 strikeouts over 177 2/3 innings. He ranked eighth among National League starters with a .237 opponent batting average. Overall, Oviedo has appeared in 81 games, including 67 starts, for both St. Louis and Pittsburgh, with a combined record of 15 wins, 26 losses, and a 4.24 ERA.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-hander Cooper Criswell. This information was reported by the Associated Press.

Fan Take: This trade highlights the Red Sox’s commitment to building pitching depth, even as they navigate injuries. For baseball fans, it’s a reminder of how team strategies often balance present challenges with future potential, keeping the sport dynamic and exciting.
