Woodbine Entertainment canceled the first live thoroughbred race scheduled for Thursday due to frigid weather conditions, subsequently calling off the remaining races as well. In Toronto, temperatures fell sharply from a morning high of 30 degrees Fahrenheit to just 16 degrees by 6 p.m., according to local weather reports. Given the cold conditions impacting all participants, the Jockeys’ Union, HBPA, and Woodbine collectively decided to cancel the day’s races to ensure everyone’s safety. Live racing is set to resume at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 5th, with temperatures expected to stay in the 30s.

Fan Take: This decision highlights the sport’s commitment to the safety and well-being of jockeys and horses, which is crucial for maintaining integrity and trust in horse racing. Weather-related cancellations, while disappointing, also show the sport’s adaptability and respect for the challenges faced by those involved.
