Poniros Gears Up for a Comeback to the Racetrack

Poniros, the unexpected winner of the Triumph Hurdle, has plans for both flat and hurdle races in his 2026 schedule, with a return planned later in the season. Owned by Tony Bloom, the four-year-old showed solid form after moving from Ralph Beckett’s stable to Willie Mullins’. He stunned fans at the Cheltenham Festival by winning on his hurdles debut at odds of 100-1 in March.

Following that victory, Poniros came second in the Champion 4-Year-Old Hurdle when Lulamba turned the tables at Punchestown, and then placed 17th in the mixed Ascot Stakes during the same season—a performance he is expected to replicate when he resumes racing. Sean Graham, Bloom’s racing manager, noted that while Poniros is in great condition, he has struggled on grass during the summer and hasn’t gained much weight.

Graham explained that after a slow start to his return, Poniros has been improving since rejoining Willie Mullins. Like many young horses from last year, he won’t race until after Christmas due to limited races for his age group, and might eventually compete in handicaps alongside older, more mature horses. The team is cautious not to overwork him, preferring to allow him time to develop fully.

Looking ahead, Poniros will start with a few hurdle races before focusing more on flat racing, where his handicap rating is 91—a level that could present promising opportunities.

Fan Take: This update on Poniros is exciting for horse racing fans because it highlights the careful management of a talented young horse with the potential to excel in both hurdles and flat racing. His progress and performance could add thrilling variety and competitiveness to the 2026 racing season.
