Mexico’s captain, Edson Alvarez, expressed confidence in his team’s potential to excel in the World Cup. “I’m excited because I’ve faced our opponents before,” Alvarez shared with TUDN, as the team prepares to compete against South Korea, South Africa, and a playoff winner.

Álvarez emphasized that playing on home soil could help the Mexican national team replicate their impressive quarterfinal runs from the 1970 and 1986 World Cups. “As one of the event’s hosts, there’s a commitment to delivering a remarkable tournament,” he said, noting that the additional support from fans will be crucial, especially in their opening match against South Africa.

Coach Javier Aguirre mentioned the challenge of not knowing one of their World Cup rivals. “We recently faced South Korea, and I’m familiar with South Africa, but the European teams in the playoffs present a different challenge. I plan to utilize my assistant for analyzing all opponents to find those with similar styles,” he elaborated.

This marks Aguirre’s third stint as Mexico’s coach, having led the team during their opener against South Africa in the 2010 World Cup.

Where will the opening game of the World Cup be held?

Mexico will kick off the 2026 World Cup against South Africa at the revamped Estadio Azteca on June 11. Historically, these teams faced off during the 2010 World Cup, ending in a 1-1 draw on the same date. At that time, Javier Aguirre was at the helm, and former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, now an assistant coach, scored for Mexico.

This upcoming match will mark the first official game at Azteca Stadium following its renovation, which began in May 2024.

Mexico’s hopeful outlook not only adds to the tournament’s allure but could also elevate the nation’s soccer status on the global stage.
