Flyers Silence Speculation: Veteran Forward Trade Rumors Put to Rest in NHL Buzz

The Philadelphia Flyers are expected to make a trade soon to reduce the number of wingers on their roster, but for now, they are trying to manage rumors surrounding certain players. Young talents Tyson Forster, Matvey Mitchkov, and Porter Martone are seen as three of the team’s future top-six wingers, leaving only one open spot for another top player.

Travis Konecny, in the first year of an eight-year, $70 million contract, is anticipated to have a career-best season with 76 points in 2024-25 but is likely to occupy the last top-six spot. Players like Owen Tippett and Bobby Brink could still play bigger roles moving forward. Tippett, 26, often comes up in trade talks due to his size, speed, inconsistency, and a contract with a no-trade clause effective from July 2026, valued at $6.2 million through 2031-32.

The ongoing debate about sophomore forward Matvei Michkov’s development under coach Rick Tocchet highlights concerns about his ability to flourish. Meanwhile, Tippett has quietly contributed nine goals and 18 points in 26 games this season, projecting to around 28 goals and 56 points—a solid performance, though not top-tier. The Flyers seem to believe Tippett can still improve.

NHL insider Elliott Friedman mentioned that the Flyers are trying to quell the negative talk about Tippett, which may be affecting him. While the Vancouver Canucks have shown interest, partly due to Tocchet’s past coaching ties, a trade seems unlikely at the moment. The Flyers are reportedly no longer pursuing Hughes, who could be a costly acquisition.

Tippett’s situation is notable as the Flyers have publicly defended him amid intense speculation, according to Friedman. It remains uncertain if Tippett will be traded before his trade protection starts on July 1, especially with Porter Martone’s arrival possibly pushing Tippett out of a key role.
