Boettcher’s Crown Twig Bag Steals the Show in Aintree Thriller

Twig clinched victory in the William Hill Half-a-Mill Becher Handicap Chase at Aintree after a fierce duel with Ben Poling. The 10-year-old horse, ridden by Beau Morgan for owner and breeder Georgia, competed in a 13-horse field over three miles and two furlongs as an 18-1 outsider.

Twigg stayed clear of trouble early on while Mahon’s Glory surged ahead, but as the race wore on, endurance became crucial. Twigg’s stamina prevailed, narrowly beating Mr Vango by a head in a gripping finish. After a tense wait during the photo finish review and steward questioning, Morgan expressed relief, highlighting Twigg’s habit of slowing when too far in front and the anxiety of waiting for the official result.

Morgan admitted he may have pushed too soon chasing Mahon’s Glory but praised Twigg for digging deep under pressure. Despite a challenging pace and less than ideal track conditions, the horse performed admirably.

Trainer Poehling, basking in his second win of the day, called Twigg a hero and praised Beau’s skillful ride and the horse’s enjoyable jumping. Poehling recounted Twigg’s early racing struggles and his eventual sale to the Morgan family for a modest £100, making the victory even sweeter. He also noted the fierce competition from Sarah’s Bloodstock’s Mr Vango and expressed excitement for the team’s success.

Another win for Poehling came with Taurus Bay, who outperformed 4-6 favorite Captain Hugo in the William Hill Novice Hurdle’s Daily Bet Boost. Purchased for £155,000 after a point-to-point win, Taurus Bay showed improvement with a polished performance, securing victory by over four lengths. Poehling praised Taurus Bay’s jumping and smart racing tactics, now viewing him as a promising prospect beyond just sprint distances.

Despite some tactical caution from jockey Ben Jones, Taurus Bay’s strong finish demonstrated his quality and promise, suggesting a bright future ahead.

Fan Take: This thrilling victory for Twig and impressive performance from Taurus Bay spotlight the depth and excitement of national hunt racing. Fans can look forward to more intense, edge-of-the-seat moments as emerging talents prove their stamina and skill in high-stakes contests.
