The former UFC flyweight champion spoke out following his title loss on Saturday night.

UFC 323 delivered one of the year’s biggest surprises in the co-main event when Joshua Vann defeated Alexandre Pantoja, who sustained a serious injury just 26 seconds into their fight. Pantoja’s impressive reign ended suddenly due to an unusual accident early in the bout. Initially, there was confusion over whether the injury was to his elbow or shoulder, but updates confirmed it was his shoulder that was damaged, leaving commentators like Joe Rogan puzzled.

The 35-year-old fighter shared his reflections on the incident that took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alexandre Pantoja later posted a video on social media addressing the outcome of UFC 323. He showed immense respect towards his opponent Joshua Vann despite the disappointing result. “Tonight isn’t just about me, it’s about Joshua Vann—it’s his destiny to win this belt,” Pantoja said. “I will work hard, all my life if needed, to reclaim this title.”

At the post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White commented on Pantoja’s injury, indicating there is no clear timeline for his return and hinting it may be a lengthy recovery. However, Pantoja remained hopeful, stating he plans to start his comeback sooner than expected.

Dana White also revealed his plans for the new champion Joshua Vann, suggesting that Vann might defend the flyweight belt in Japan, possibly against Tatsuro Taira or the winner of a fight between Brandon Roybal and Manel Cape, or potentially wait for Pantoja’s return. Taira’s recent win enhances his chances of becoming a title contender, and the possibility of the UFC hosting a major event in Japan excites fans worldwide.

Fan Take: This shocking injury and title change at UFC 323 inject fresh drama into the flyweight division, keeping fans on the edge of their seats. The prospect of a comeback for Pantoja and the UFC’s expansion into new markets like Japan could significantly shape the sport’s future landscape.
