With six months remaining until the inaugural World Cup, excitement among fans for the 48-team tournament has surged following the recent draw announcement. The interest has also sparked activity in betting markets, with some eager participants placing wagers even before the official draw, particularly on the United States, which will co-host the event with Mexico and Canada.

Johnny Abello, director of sportsbook operations at DraftKings, noted, “There’s already a chance that the U.S. could win the trophy.” He mentioned that while the U.S. is currently attracting investment, the situation may worsen if betting trends continue. Despite this optimism, the team is not favored to win; Spain currently holds that position.

The recent draw did not reveal the anticipated “Group of Death” that often arises in World Cups, which can turn the path to the finals into a challenging journey. Abello indicated that the odds for championship futures remained relatively stable post-draw, with Spain as the leading contender at +450, followed by England at +550, France at +750, Brazil at +800, and the reigning champion Argentina at +850.

“This draw hasn’t really shifted the odds much,” Abello commented. There’s a slight increase in betting interest, particularly towards England and Germany, while Colombia at 50-1 could also be a profitable option. It’s likely that interest will build moderately over the upcoming months, but by June, the stakes will heighten significantly.

Abello explained, “While we’ve gathered funds for all teams, we haven’t seen any major bets yet; this event will definitely capture attention leading into the summer.”

The U.S. men’s national team finds itself in Group D alongside Australia and Paraguay, with the fourth spot decided by a playoff involving Türkiye, Kosovo, Slovakia, and Romania. Team USA is currently the favored choice at +150 to win their group and reach the knockout stage, specifically the Round of 32, a feat they’re expected to achieve barring any significant slips.

In FIFA’s world rankings, the U.S. is placed 14th and shares the same odds of +8000 to win the tournament, highlighting that while they lag behind the top teams, they are well-positioned to advance to the Round of 32. DraftKings indicates a -575 line for Team USA to move forward, suggesting strong expectations of their qualification.

The crucial question remaining is whether the U.S. can progress to the more challenging Round of 16. Abello believes it’s feasible, and American bettors will likely be counting on this. “The United States has a strong team with a capable coach in Mauricio Pochettino, and playing at home raises the stakes. Whether they perform well or not, the excitement of betting will only increase.”

If Team USA does advance, it could lead to a significant uptick in betting on U.S. futures. Similarly, Mexico is also listed at +8000 to win the Cup, set in Group A with South Africa, South Korea, and Denmark potentially competing for qualification. Mexico stands as a +130 favorite to win their group.

Canada, on the other hand, finds itself with +25000 odds amid the three host nations. They are grouped in B with Switzerland, Qatar, and possibly Italy, with Switzerland favored at +175, followed by Italy at +230, and Canada at +275.
