Knicks Embrace Next-Man-Up Approach as Miles McBride Awaits Injury Update

The Knicks have been informed about the contract extension. Miles Bridges suffered a sprained ankle on Monday, while McBride injured his ankle on Sunday and had X-rays that came back negative. McBride is set to have an MRI on Monday, which will help the Knicks and McBride establish a clearer timeline for his potential return to the court.

It’s unlikely McBride will play in the game against Toronto on Tuesday. The Knicks’ next game will be either Saturday or Sunday, so McBride will need time to recover. The Knicks will face a challenge without McBride, who is averaging a career-best 12 points per game and shooting over 45% from the field. In his absence, the team may rely on Tyler Korek and likely use a committee approach for the point guard role off the bench.

New York has shown resilience despite injuries this season, with players like Jalen Brunson, Anunoby, and Landry Shamet missing multiple games. Mitchell Robinson was held out of the lineup as a precaution, and Karl-Anthony Towns missed a recent victory against Orlando due to a calf strain.

Throughout these setbacks, the Knicks have performed admirably, winning 13 of 14 home games and holding an overall record of 16-7. On Sunday, Ariel Hukporti stepped up with seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and a perfect free-throw performance. Mikal Bridges praised Hukporti’s talent and smart play, noting that despite some lineup changes, the team has depth and versatility.

Hukporti earned the Defensive Player of the Game honor as coach Mike Brown highlighted his vertical movement, hustle for 50/50 balls, speed in transition, and crucial blocks. Anunoby and Bridges also delivered strong performances, with Anunoby making five of seven three-point attempts, collecting seven rebounds, and snagging four steals, while Bridges contributed seven assists and led an aggressive defensive effort.

Coach Brown acknowledged Bridges and Anunoby as natural talents and potential All-Stars, noting that although OG Anunoby hasn’t played enough games yet, Mikal’s performance has been exceptional. Brown emphasized that the Knicks are not relying on just two players; others on the roster have stepped up, posting career-best numbers that significantly impact wins.

However, the recognition might overlook some of Anunoby’s advanced stats and defensive impact, which are hard to quantify fully. Anunoby himself believes that All-Star recognition might come in due time but insists that winning remains the priority.

Fan Take: This update highlights the Knicks’ depth and resilience amid key injuries, showcasing how emerging players like Hukporti are stepping up. For basketball fans, it underscores the evolving landscape where teams with strong bench contributions and defensive tenacity can thrive, making the sport even more exciting and unpredictable.
