Legendary UFC heavyweight suffers gruesome lip explosion after stunning last-second knockout in epic Octagon clash

Six years ago today, a brutal heavyweight clash showcased that it’s never too late to suffer injury in a fight.

On December 7, 2019, the UFC event took place in Washington, DC, featuring notable fighters like former welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves, rising featherweight Bryce Mitchell, and bantamweight striker Song Yadong. The spotlight was on the heavyweight division at Capital One Arena, with Dutch legend Alistair Overeem making his fifth UFC main event appearance. Overeem came into the bout against Jairzinho Rozenstruik riding a two-fight winning streak, with back-to-back knockouts over Sergei Pavlovic and Alexei Oleinik.

However, his bid for the heavyweight title ended in a violent fashion.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik earned his first UFC main event spot after starting 3-0 in the promotion, including a swift 29-second KO against former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. But during the 24 minutes at UFC Washington, Overeem clearly outperformed the Surinamese fighter, leading on all three judges’ scorecards going into the fifth round. With only four seconds left, Rozenstruik landed a devastating right hand that split Overeem’s lip open. Although Overeem quickly rose, his wobble prompted referee Dan Miragliotta to stop the fight. The injury was one of the most severe ever seen in the Octagon, leaving Overeem with a gruesome lip tear.

Six years later, neither Overeem nor Rozenstruik are active in the UFC heavyweight division. New stars have emerged but face their own challenges. Most recently, the undisputed heavyweight champion from Britain made his debut defense under complicated circumstances involving Jon Jones, interim champ Tom Aspinall, and a controversial eye poke by Cyrill Gane causing a no-contest at UFC 321. Dana White responded to criticism regarding injury remarks made about Aspinall, assuring fans that the fighter was being well taken care of and clarifying that his comments were not negative or derogatory.

Fan Take: This intense matchup and its aftermath highlight the brutal, unpredictable nature of heavyweight MMA and the ongoing evolution of the division.
