Anticipating Breakthroughs: The Journey Toward Progress in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Sparks’ future shines as brightly as the city’s summer sun, promising an exciting potential that caught the attention of WNBA fans last season. Although the Sparks ended with a 21-23 record and missed the playoffs for the fifth year in a row—a disappointing streak—they showcased significant improvement in the latter part of the season by winning 15 of their last 24 games, despite a challenging start of 6 wins and 14 losses.

Throughout the season, the Sparks ranked second in scoring, averaging 85.7 points per game and shooting 45.7% from the field, while hitting 33.7% of their three-point attempts. However, their defense struggled, allowing the highest points per game in the league at 88.2 and ranking third in opponents’ shooting percentage at 45.3, difficulties compounded by injuries and instability under first-year head coach Lynn Roberts.

Before the All-Star break, the Sparks had an 8-14 record with solid offensive stats but strong defense, conceding only 86.9 points per game. After the break, they turned the tables with a 13-9 record, leading the league in scoring at 88.1 points per game, maintaining a high shooting percentage but allowing 89.6 points on defense, the most in the league.

Key to their success were four main players: Kelsey Plum (19.5 PPG, 5.7 APG), Dearica Hamby (18.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG), Rickea Jackson (14.7 PPG), and Azura Stevens (12.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG), each averaging double-digit points and consistently appearing in games. Additional valuable contributions came from players like Cameron Brink, returning from injury with solid defense and blocking, Julie Allemand, who strengthened the backcourt, and Ray Burrell, who showed steady improvement.

Despite progress since 2024, the Sparks still need to bolster their defense and maintain offensive strength to advance. With no first-round draft pick in 2026, the team’s focus will shift to free agency for talent acquisition. Currently, only Jackson, Brink, Sarah Ashley Barker, and Sania Feagin are under contract for the next season, raising questions about the roles and retention of key players like Plum, Hamby, and Stevens.

The Sparks haven’t reached the playoffs since stars Candace Parker and Chelsea Gray left in 2020, but with a blend of youthful talent and experienced players, they are poised to become championship contenders once more. The team made strong strides last season, and the goal now is to bring playoff basketball back to Los Angeles, building a new era of Sparks success that rekindles the championship spirit of their past.

Fan Take: This development is huge for WNBA fans because it signals the rise of a rejuvenated Sparks team that combines veteran leadership with fresh talent, promising thrilling and competitive basketball ahead. A strong Lakers-backed franchise returning to playoff prominence could elevate the visibility and popularity of the entire league, inspiring a new generation of players and supporters.
