Rudy Gobert Flies High Then Gets Ejected for Forearm Smash on Mark Williams in Timberwolves vs Suns Clash

During Monday night’s game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Phoenix Suns, Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert was ejected after using his forearm to stop Mark Williams mid-air as he attempted a dunk. In the third quarter at Target Center, Williams charged through the lane and began to rise for what looked like an easy dunk, with Gobert positioned to his right but not directly blocking his path to the rim.

As Williams went up, Gobert struck him forcefully in the ribs with his forearm, disrupting his dunk and causing him to crash hard onto the court. Gobert appeared to acknowledge the foul by raising a finger, but the referees escalated the call to a Flagrant 2 due to the severity of the contact, resulting in Gobert’s ejection. At the time of his departure, Gobert had tallied 15 points and 8 rebounds. The 33-year-old, currently averaging 11 points and 10.2 rebounds per game (ranked 12th in the league), is in the first year of a new three-year, $109.5 million contract with the Timberwolves.

Fan Take: This incident highlights the intense physicality and split-second decisions that define modern basketball, reminding fans of the fine line between aggressive defense and fouls that can change the outcome of games. Gobert’s ejection could impact the Timberwolves’ defensive presence moving forward, emphasizing how discipline and control remain crucial for top contenders.
