Champion jockey Zac Purton is excited about competing against some of the world’s best riders as he aims for his fourth Longines International Jockeys Championship (IJC) title in Hong Kong this Wednesday night. Having previously won the Happy Valley event in 2017, 2020, and 2021, Purton leads the local jockey standings by 27 wins while pursuing his ninth Hong Kong Jockey Championship. However, with top international jockeys arriving to contend for the HK$1 million prize, he faces a fresh challenge.

This year’s event promises fierce competition, featuring seven former Longines IJC champions. Ryan Moore recently returned to racing after recovering from a foot injury and will make his 19th appearance. He joins a strong lineup including James McDonald, the top four jockeys from the Longines World’s Best Jockey rankings, defending champion Michael Barzalona, William Buick, and Moore himself.
Other competitors completing the 12-person field include Hugh Bowman, Holly Doyle, Vincent Ho, Rachel King, Joan Moreira, Christophe Lemaire, and Humberto Rispoli. The Jockey Challenge serves as a precursor to the HK$130 million Longines Hong Kong International Race (HKIR) at Sha Tin on Sunday, December 14.
Purton is expected to play a key role in the HKIR, notably riding Cain Rising as he attempts to defend his title in the HK$28 million G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint (1200m). He will also pilot the crowd-favorite Voyage Bubble in the HK$36 million G1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m).
