Michael Whittaker shares on X about the Detroit Red Wings’ impressive goaltending following their offseason acquisition of John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks. On Monday night, Gibson delivered a standout performance reminiscent of his prime, making 39 saves and achieving his first shutout of the season against the Vancouver Canucks.

Despite being heavily pressured and often trapped in his own zone during the first period, Gibson made several crucial saves to keep the Red Wings in the game. He maintained his excellent form in the second period, preventing the Canucks from scoring as his teammates took charge offensively.

James van Riemsdyk broke a scoreless deadlock late in the first period with his fourth goal of the season, marking the longest scoring streak of his NHL career. Detroit then added two more goals in the second period: Andrew Copp netted his second goal thanks to a brilliant four-way passing sequence involving Axel Sandin-Pelica, Alex DeBrincat, and Patrick Kane, followed shortly by rookie Nate Danielson’s deflected shot, his second career goal.

Gibson continued to repel Canucks’ attacks in the third period, and Dylan Larkin secured the win by scoring an empty-net goal. Gibson’s shutout was his first since January 4, 2023, achieved when he was still with the Ducks. Meanwhile, Canucks’ goalie Kevin Lankinen was pulled after conceding three goals on 13 shots in the first two periods, replaced by Nikita Tropilo in the third.

The Red Wings, midway through a six-game road trip, have climbed to first place in the Atlantic Division, showcasing strong momentum as the season progresses.
