Report: Mets Eye Freddy Peralta as Brewers Kickstart Trade Talks

The Mets are showing interest in Brewers’ starting pitcher Freddy Peralta as they aim to strengthen their rotation during the offseason. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Milwaukee might be open to trading the right-hander if the Mets agree to meet a higher asking price.

Given that Peralta is only owed $8 million this season, there is widespread interest in the pitcher. Since joining the Brewers’ starting rotation in 2021, Peralta has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the league. He recently completed an outstanding season, breaking several personal records.

In the past year, Peralta pitched 176.2 innings, secured a league-high 17 wins, posted a 2.70 ERA, had a 1.07 WHIP, and struck out 204 batters, finishing fifth in the National League Cy Young Award voting. He has now achieved at least 30 starts and 165 innings pitched for three consecutive seasons.

It’s not yet clear what the Brewers want in return for Peralta, but it’s likely they will seek one of the Mets’ promising young pitchers, such as Brandon Sproat or Jonah Tong, as part of the trade. Sherman also mentioned that the Mets inquired about Brewers’ late-inning reliever Trevor Megill.

Fan Take: This potential trade highlights the Mets’ commitment to becoming a powerhouse and adds excitement to the offseason. For baseball fans, acquiring Peralta could shift the balance of power in the National League and signal an intense competition ahead.
