Mike Trout Remains Uncertain About Joining the World Baseball Classic in the USA; Schwarber Set to Play

Mike Trout, a key player for Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, is still being considered for the 2026 roster as it is being finalized. Team manager Mark DeRosa mentioned on Tuesday that Trout is among the potential candidates for the last few spots, provided he is healthy and agrees to participate. DeRosa shared at MLB’s winter meetings that discussions are ongoing with Trout and other players to understand Trout’s intentions.

The two-time American League MVP is in a tricky position for Team USA, which will open the tournament against Brazil on March 6 in Houston. In May, Trout was placed on the disabled list due to a bruise on his left knee and mostly served as a designated hitter last season because of ongoing knee issues that required meniscus surgery in 2024. Despite hitting 26 home runs in 130 games, his .232/.359/.439 batting line and high strikeout rate have raised concerns about his health and readiness for the next World Baseball Classic.

Trout, who captained Team USA in 2023, faces the challenge of balancing the international competition with preparing for the upcoming MLB season with the Angels. DeRosa considers the possibility of using Trout as a full-time designated hitter on the roster, which demands a short, high-impact lineup. “He’s got to get ready for his 26th season with the Angels,” DeRosa noted. “He didn’t play much defensively. It’s a balance—what he wants and feels comfortable doing.”

Team USA also announced new position players including designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, infielders Gunnar Henderson and Bryce Turan, and catcher Will Smith. They join captain Aaron Judge, outfielders Corbin Carroll and Pete Crow-Armstrong, and catcher Cal Lowry. On the pitching side, National League Cy Young winner Paul Skeens will lead the American team alongside left-hander Matthew Boyd and reliever Garrett Whitlock.

General manager Mike Hill emphasized the importance of strengthening the pitching staff. “We respected players’ seasons and ensured they were healthy,” Hill said. “As we approach the offseason, we will focus on building a deep and capable pitching staff.” Tariq Skubal, a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, remains a top priority for the pitching roster.

DeRosa stressed that the aim is not just to gather star players but to create a balanced team with defense, speed, and versatility. The loss to Japan in the 2023 WBC finals, highlighted by Shohei Ohtani striking out Trout, motivated a more strategic team-building approach. DeRosa acknowledged that if Trout signs on and stays healthy, his presence could significantly influence team dynamics, but the conversation with him is still ongoing.

Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fan Take: This update is crucial for baseball enthusiasts because Mike Trout’s participation could greatly impact Team USA’s chances in the next World Baseball Classic. His health and decision will not only affect the team’s competitive edge but also symbolize the balance players must find between international play and major league commitments, reflecting broader trends in the sport.
