Confident Romantic Warriors Gear Up for Thrilling Re-challenge in Hong Kong Cup

Champion jockey James McDonald expressed great confidence in Romantic Warrior as the horse aims to win an unprecedented fourth G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup (2000m), vying for a prize of HK$40 million at Sha Tin, Hong Kong, on Sunday, December 14. McDonald praised the gelding’s recent gallop, which clocked 1 minute 16.90 seconds with a final 400-meter split of 22.30 seconds over 1200 meters at Sha Tin’s turf track on December 9, where Romantic Warrior trained alongside stablemate Romantik So.

McDonald highlighted that Romantic Warrior is preparing exceptionally well, showing a calm and confident demeanor after working with stablemaster Romantic Thor. He noted the horse’s steady progress, saying, “He’s full of confidence and definitely not slowing down.” The jockey holds Romantic Warrior to high standards and believes the horse is very happy and loves his work.

After a 232-day break due to surgery on his left anterior bulbar, the seven-year-old gelding made a remarkable comeback by winning the G2 Bock Jockey Club Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin last month. Romantic Warrior made history last year by becoming the first horse to win the Triple Crown at the Longines Hong Kong Cup, having previously secured the top prize in 2022 and 2023.

In addition, McDonald will reunite with Galaxy Patch in the HK$36 million G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile (1600m) following a recent victory in the G2 Bock Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. McDonald believes Galaxy Patch gained significant confidence from that race, though acknowledges the competition will be tough. He regards Galaxy Patch as a strong Group 1 contender, though notes the gelding’s racing style requires some luck and may benefit from a wider field.

McDonald also recognizes the challenge of facing competitors like Voyage Bubble, a horse he previously rode to four Group 1 wins, including last year’s Longines Hong Kong Mile, who placed second to Romantic Warrior in their latest encounter. He also mentioned other strong contenders such as Soul Rush, describing the upcoming race as very competitive—likely the toughest of the four Group 1 events.

Fan Take: This exciting showdown highlights the exceptional talent and fierce competition in elite horse racing, with Romantic Warrior seeking a historic win. Fans should watch closely, as the results could redefine dominance in the sport and inspire a new generation of champions.
