White Sox Secure Top Spot in MLB Draft: Spotlight on 5 Leading Candidates, Featuring UCLA Shortstop as No. 1 Overall Pick

The Chicago White Sox secured the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 Major League Baseball draft lottery on Tuesday night. This marks the third time the South Siders have won the top spot, their first since selecting Harold Baines back in 1977. MLB introduced this draft lottery system as part of the 2022-27 collective bargaining agreement, where only the six worst-performing teams can enter, with restrictions based on revenue sharing. Previous lottery winners include the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Guardians, and Washington Nationals, who picked right-hander Paul Skeens, infielder Travis Bazana, and infielder Eli Willits, respectively.

Speculation now turns to who the White Sox might choose with this coveted pick. While complete preseason draft rankings won’t be available until February, five standout players currently have strong prospects to be top picks: Roch Cholowski, a highly athletic shortstop from UCLA known for his impressive batting and defense; Grady Emerson, a polished left-handed hitter and strong defensive shortstop from Texas’ Argyle High School; Jacob Lombardo, a versatile shortstop with a baseball family background and a blend of power and speed from Florida’s Gulliver Prep; Drew Burress, a power-hitting center fielder from Georgia Tech with notable home run stats despite some inconsistencies; and Justin LeBron, a talent from Alabama with power and speed but facing challenges with a high strikeout rate.

Fan Take: This draft lottery win is a huge opportunity for the White Sox to reshape their future with fresh talent. For baseball fans, it’s exciting because it highlights the growing competitiveness of the draft system and introduces promising young players who could become the stars of tomorrow’s game.
