Haley Van Lith Faces Potential Dismissal as WNBA Offseason Approaches for Sky

The Chicago Sky have already secured Haley Van Lith, which is unusual for a first-round rookie in most offseasons. However, this year’s offseason is unique due to the upcoming expansion drafts for the new Toronto and Portland teams. ESPN reports that WNBA teams are expected to protect only five players during the expansion draft, with many players becoming free agents, thus limiting team options. Van Lith remains on the edge of being protected or exposed.

ESPN’s Kevin Pelton has listed Van Lith as the Sky’s fifth and final protected player, though he views her as the least certain choice. He explains that with most of the roster heading to unrestricted free agency, the Sky’s likely choices for the final protected spot are Van Lith or Maddie Westveld. Despite Van Lith’s rookie struggles, shooting just 5-of-31 from three-point range (16%), her status as a recent first-round draft pick probably gives her the advantage over Westveld.

Haley Van Lith has reunited with former LSU teammate Angel Reese in Chicago. The Sky didn’t give Van Lith a major role during her rookie season, so she had to contribute without finding consistent rhythm. Given her name recognition and youth, Van Lith could be in demand during the expansion drafts if left unprotected.

Chicago, having daily access to Van Lith in practices and workouts, has deeper insight into her potential than other teams. If the Sky do protect her, it signals optimism about her future in the WNBA. Conversely, if they leave her unprotected, it might indicate a challenging path ahead for Van Lith in the league.

Fan Take: This news is crucial for WNBA fans as it highlights the impact of expansion drafts on young talent and team strategies. Protecting or exposing players like Van Lith could shift team dynamics and player careers, reflecting the growing complexity and competitiveness of the league.
