Inside Scoop: Red Wings’ Sebastian Cossa Reflects on Stellar Season Kickoff and Bond with John Gibson

The Grand Rapids Griffins, serving as the AHL affiliate for the Detroit Red Wings, began their season with an impressive run, clinching victory in 20 of their opening 22 games. A standout player is goaltender Sebastian Cossa, a highly regarded prospect who has been nearly unbeatable online. Selected 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, Cossa boasts a stellar 11-1-0 record, with a 1.76 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage across 12 games.

In an interview with Hockey News ahead of the Griffins’ weekend clashes against the Rockford IceHogs and Chicago Wolves, Cossa attributed much of his success to the veteran NHL players on the roster, crediting their experience for his strong performance. “Now in my third AHL season, my confidence has grown, and I understand what it takes to excel night after night. Having the league’s best penalty kill has also been a huge help,” Cossa said. He emphasized that playing alongside seasoned players has significantly contributed to his growth.

Grand Rapids’ top scorer John Leonard recently highlighted the team’s focused mindset despite their hot start, a sentiment Cossa shares. He acknowledged the external hype but stressed the importance of staying grounded and maintaining daily dedication. “There’s always going to be noise, but we focus on our work ethic and taking each game seriously. Every opponent comes prepared to face us, so we expect to face tough competition every night, and our team rises to the challenge,” he said.

During the offseason, Cossa worked closely with Griffins’ goalie coach Roup Koistinen to hone his techniques, focusing on leveraging his natural reflexes and his impressive 6-foot-6 stature to improve control during lateral movements. Meanwhile, Detroit strengthened its goaltending by acquiring John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks in a draft-day trade. Cossa praised Gibson’s impact, noting their quick bond and Gibson’s willingness to mentor him. “He’s a great guy, very approachable, and always eager to help. I feel comfortable talking to him anytime,” Cossa shared.

Cossa also admired Gibson’s resilience in bouncing back from a challenging start this season. When asked about rumors of a potential NHL call-up, Cossa confirmed that while reaching the NHL is his ultimate ambition, he is focused first on dominating at the AHL level. “I want to get there, but I know I need to prove myself here consistently. I’m committed to maintaining my performance and taking that confidence with me when I get the chance,” he explained.

Throughout the interview, Cossa emphasized his goal to not just compete but to dominate as he advances. The team hopes to carry their momentum into the playoffs but remains focused on delivering strong performances every game. The Griffins will next face the Rockford IceHogs at Van Andel Arena, with games available to stream on 96.1 The Game, WOOD 106.9 FM/1300 AM, and AHL.TV via FloHockey.tv.

Fan Take: Sebastian Cossa’s rapid development and the Griffins’ strong start signal a promising future for Detroit’s goaltending. For hockey fans, this blend of emerging talent and seasoned mentorship could shape a new era of competitive success, highlighting the critical role of AHL affiliates in nurturing NHL stars.
