Red Wings Gain Steam Against Blackhawks Despite Missing Connor Bedard

On Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings concluded a lengthy road trip by heading to Chicago to play the Blackhawks, who will be without their breakout star, Connor Bedard, due to a shoulder injury that sidelined him in Friday’s game against the St. Louis Blues.

Bedard, the 2023 first overall draft pick, has been outstanding this season with 44 points in 31 games, placing him tied for third in the NHL alongside San Jose’s Maclin Celebrini. He is one of only two Blackhawks players to maintain such a high point-per-game average over the past 12 games, and his absence will be felt against an improving Detroit squad.

Despite a recent loss to the Edmonton Oilers which ended their six-point streak, the Red Wings seem to be regaining momentum. This sets up an intriguing rematch, especially since Detroit previously shocked Chicago with a 5-1 victory at Little Caesars Arena.

The Red Wings have struggled with depth scoring and defensive challenges throughout the season. However, recent performances suggest improvement, particularly with veterans Andrew Copp and James van Riemsdyk stepping up. Copp has been productive alongside star forwards Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane, contributing six points in five games. Meanwhile, Van Riemsdyk has impressed by netting six goals in eight games.

Detroit is currently averaging three goals per game during their recent surge, though they have allowed 21 goals over their last seven contests. Much of their hope lies with goaltender John Gibson, who has won his last four games, including a 39-save shutout against Vancouver and a strong 34-save effort versus Calgary. If Gibson continues his strong form, Detroit’s goalie situation may finally settle.

On the other hand, the Blackhawks’ early success, largely driven by Bedard, has slowed, with only three wins in their last 12 games. They have averaged 2.25 goals per game but have struggled defensively, conceding 3.67 goals per game, the fifth-worst in the NHL. Without Bedard, veteran winger Tyler Bertuzzi becomes a key offensive threat, having scored 19 points in his last 16 games, but overall team scoring remains a concern.

The goalie matchup features Detroit’s John Gibson, who has an 8-7-1 season record, against Chicago’s Arvid Soderblom, who holds a 3-5-1 record. Gibson holds a slight statistical edge despite the challenges faced by both goalies.

Fan Take: This matchup highlights the dynamic shifts in the NHL, with Detroit’s resurgence and Chicago’s reliance on young talent like Bedard underscoring the league’s competitive balance. Hockey fans should watch closely as these developments could shape playoff races and the future trajectories of both franchises.
