Unruly Scenes Unfold in Kolkata During Messi’s ‘GOAT Tour’: Fans Outraged Over Limited Access to the Soccer Legend

Lionel Messi always attracts attention, and his recent visit to Kolkata was no different. The star, fresh off an incredible season with Inter Miami where he secured both the league MVP title and the MLS Cup, is currently on his much-anticipated “GOAT Tour” of India. However, the first stop was marred by chaos and fan frenzy that led to a premature end of his scheduled events.

The tour kicked off with the unveiling of a massive 70-foot statue in his honor. Yet shortly after arriving at Salt Lake Stadium to greet fans, the situation escalated as frustrated supporters began tearing up seats and throwing objects onto the field, leading to the cancellation of the planned stadium tour. Many had paid around $133 for tickets only to find their view obstructed by prominent political figures and celebrities, causing anger among the crowd. Consequently, Messi was whisked away by security just 20 minutes into the event, with further stops planned in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee later expressed her regret over the incident, stating, “I sincerely apologize to Lionel Messi and all sports lovers for the unfortunate incident.” She announced the formation of a commission to investigate the disruptions and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Such incidents of fan disruptions are becoming increasingly common, particularly as Messi, now 38, draws countless fans eager to catch a glimpse of him before his playing days are over. His ongoing tour marks an important moment for soccer enthusiasts in India.

As soccer continues to evolve globally, ensuring that fans can enjoy these experiences safely and smoothly is crucial for the sport’s growth and development.
