The Mets and Padres are currently engaged in trade discussions, according to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Dennis Lin, and Will Sammon. San Diego is reportedly interested in several players from New York, including right-handed starter Nick Pivetta, outfielder Ramon Laureano, and three relief pitchers: right-handers Jeremiah Estrada and Mason Miller, and left-hander Adrian Morejon.

At the same time, the Padres are exploring all the Mets’ young major league players and top prospects. The Mets had been deep in talks with the Athletics regarding Miller, who the Padres ultimately acquired in a trade on July 31 before the 2025 deadline.

Mason Miller, an All-Star in 2024 for the Athletics, has impressed in 22 games this season with the Padres, recording 45 strikeouts and allowing only two runs over 23.1 innings. The 27-year-old is under team control through the 2029 season.

Nick Pivetta, 32, joined the Padres on a four-year, $55 million contract after playing for the Phillies (2017-20) and Red Sox (2020-24). This season, he has compiled a 13-5 record with a 2.87 ERA in 31 games, achieving career highs in WAR (5.3) and WHIP (0.985). Pivetta’s contract includes an opt-out after 2026 and a player option for 2027.

Ramon Laureano, 31, signed with the Orioles last February on a one-year, $4 million deal with a team option for 2026. The Padres acquired him on July 31 and exercised his option in early November. Last year, Laureano played 50 games for San Diego, batting .269 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs. Across 132 games split between Baltimore and San Diego, he hit 24 homers with a .281 average.

Adrian Morejon, 26, a 2025 All-Star and longtime Padre, defected from Cuba in 2015, signed with San Diego in 2016, and made his MLB debut in 2019. In 75 games last season, he posted a career-best 2.08 ERA and 0.896 WHIP over 73.2 innings.

Jeremiah Estrada, 27, joined the Padres via waivers in November 2023. In two seasons with San Diego, he has maintained a 3.22 ERA and 1.119 WHIP in 139 games totaling 134 innings.

Fan Take: This trade buzz between the Mets and Padres is exciting for baseball fans as it involves several key young talents who could reshape team dynamics. If completed, it has the potential to significantly impact the competitive landscape of MLB in the coming years.
