Manchester United have completed the signing of 13-year-old defensive prospect Socrates. Socrates is a highly regarded young player who has attracted the attention of scouts across the United States following his outstanding performances at the elite London Academy.

The move is another major step in United’s new commitment to developing elite young talent under the direction of INEOS and director of football Jason Wilcox.

Born and raised in London, Socrates’ path to Old Trafford was not an easy one.
The young centre-back endured rejected trials at Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, a setback that would have disappointed many players his age.

Rather, they formed the basis of his determination. His time at the Elite London Academy, one of the capital’s most respected youth facilities, provided him with the perfect environment to hone his game and grow both technically and mentally.

Initially starting as a winger, Socrates was gradually converted to centre-back by academy coaches who recognized his exceptional reading of the game, calmness under pressure and ability to make progressive passes from the back.

Socrates impressed United scouts during a series of trial sessions earlier this year.

His leadership qualities and composure in possession were so outstanding that Man United moved to add him to their youth team.

After weeks of monitoring, United decided to move quickly to secure his signature, fending off interest from several Premier League rivals.

As part of his integration plan, the teenager will move to Manchester and join one of the region’s top performing schools, ensuring a balanced approach between his academic and football development.

The latest additions are part of United’s wider strategy to rebuild their academy pipeline, which has historically produced stars such as Marcus Rashford, Koby Mainu and Alejandro Garnacho.

Inspired by INEOS, the club has further strengthened its youth-first philosophy, targeting technically talented players from across the UK and Europe who can progress through the ranks.

Although Socrates is still years away from being able to compete for the first team, his addition reflects the active scouting and recruitment system currently being refined at Carrington.

Sources close to the academy describe him as “mature beyond his years”, with natural leadership abilities and a confidence rarely seen in players of his generation.

The Euro giants are ‘still paying very close attention’ to the Man United star’s situation ahead of January.
