Crystal d’Estruval Advances Closer to Cheltenham Glory

Harry Durham is setting his sights on the Cheltenham Festival with Crystal d’Estruval, who maintained an undefeated streak with a commanding win at Carlisle. Purchased for £400,000 at Tattersall’s Cheltenham Festival Sale in March, the four-year-old started justifying the hefty price last month by beating Baron Noir on his hurdles debut at Warwick.

The Pricedup.Bet Novice’s Hurdle was an ideal chance for Crystal d’Estruval to continue his success, entering the race as the overwhelming 1-14 favorite. Despite a few minor jumping errors, he lived up to expectations, finishing 38 lengths ahead under jockey Paul O’Brien.

Durham, having traveled from Berkshire to Cumbria to train the sole runner of the day, commented to Racing TV that the horse probably didn’t learn much from this race but showed promise. He explained that when something unsettles Crystal d’Estruval in races, he jumps well and focuses but loses drive during the straights. This behavior is mirrored in training, where the horse performs better against stronger competition rather than weaker opponents.

Paddy Power continues to back Crystal d’Estruval, who previously finished 25-1 in both the Supreme Novice Hurdle and Turner’s Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham. Durham mentioned considering a race at Haydock in the new year, aiming higher now that this hurdle is behind them. He emphasized the importance of choosing the right track, avoiding poor conditions, and views Haydock as a potential next target.

Durham also reflected on the horse’s Cheltenham prospects, noting it may be mentally challenging for Crystal d’Estruval to compete there this season. While his optimum race distance is two miles, Durham is in no rush to extend it and anticipates many difficult races ahead over longer trips.

Fan Take: This update is exciting for horse racing enthusiasts because Crystal d’Estruval shows great potential to be a standout competitor at future Cheltenham Festivals. His continued development and strategic race placement could make him a thrilling contender to watch in the sport’s top novice hurdle events.
