Phoenix Mercury forward Sato Sabally will be out indefinitely from the Unrivaled league due to concussion-related symptoms, as reported by ESPN’s Kendra Andrews. Sabally sustained a concussion during Game 3 of the WNBA Finals against the Las Vegas Aces, causing her to miss Game 4, where the Aces secured their third WNBA championship in four years. The Unrivaled season is set to commence on January 5th, more than two months after the WNBA Finals concluded.

Last year, Sabally posted averages of 16.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, helping the Mercury achieve a 27-17 record and reach the WNBA Finals. That season marked her debut with the Mercury after five years with the Dallas Wings. In the Unrivaled league, she competes for Phantom BC, where she averaged 15.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists last season. Despite her efforts, the Phantoms ended with a 4-10 record, finishing last.

Sabally’s spot in Unrivaled will be taken over by Tiffany Hayes from Golden State Valkyries. Hayes averaged 11.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3 assists last season and previously played for Race BC in Unrivaled.

Fan Take: Sabally’s absence is a significant blow to both her team and the league, highlighting the ongoing importance of player health and safety in women’s basketball. Her recovery and return will be closely watched by WNBA fans eager to see one of the league’s rising stars back in action, underscoring the sport’s growing depth and competitive spirit.
