Phillies Ink Adris Garcia to One-Year Deal, Marking the End of Nick Castellanos’ Tenure with the Team

Nick Castellanos’ era with the Philadelphia Phillies has come to an end as the team reportedly signed Adris Garcia to a one-year, $10 million deal on Monday. Garcia, who was non-tendered by the Texas Rangers in November, is expected to be the Phillies’ main right fielder in 2026. Although Garcia had a rough 2025 season, hitting .227/.271/.394 with 19 home runs, he brings strong defensive skills that the Phillies felt Castellanos lacked. Castellanos himself was frustrated last year about being substituted out of games for defensive reasons.

The Phillies hope Garcia will bounce back offensively after an All-Star 2023 with the Rangers, despite a dip in batting average over the last two seasons to .225/.278/.397. In 2025, Garcia improved his exit velocity and reduced his strikeout rate to a career-low 24.7 percent, signs that suggest he may return to form soon. His power hitting is especially suited for Citizens Bank Park, known as a favorable home run venue.

As Garcia steps into the primary right fielder role, Castellanos, 33, is nearing the end of his five-year, $100 million contract with $20 million due in 2026. The Phillies are likely to trade or release Castellanos before spring training. While Castellanos has posted better numbers than Garcia since 2024 with a .252/.303/.416 slash line, his defensive shortcomings and dissatisfaction with his playing time contributed to the team’s decision to move on.

Castellanos still has power, but signs show his batting velocity and hard-hit percentage declined in 2025, suggesting his best days may be behind him. If traded, he might be utilized primarily as a designated hitter, a role unavailable in Philadelphia due to Kyle Schwarber’s return. Emphasizing defense, the Phillies struggled in fielding last season, ranking below average in nearly every defensive metric.

Though not a blockbuster move, signing Garcia addresses one of the Phillies’ major weaknesses as they continue to chase their first World Series title since 2008. Even a modest upgrade in defense and power could have a meaningful impact when the season starts in October.

Fan Take: This roster change highlights how teams are increasingly valuing defense alongside offense to build championship contenders. For baseball fans, Garcia’s signing offers hope that bolstering defense can tip the balance and finally bring a title back to Philly after years of close calls.
