Jeremy Doku’s Injury: The Challenge of Filling the Void for Manchester City’s Rising Star Before His January Comeback

Jeremy Doku will not participate in the remaining matches for Manchester City in 2025, as manager Pep Guardiola plans to observe his return on New Year’s Day in Sunderland. Doku, who has been performing exceptionally well this season, missed the game against Crystal Palace due to a leg injury and is estimated to be sidelined for two to three weeks. Guardiola mentioned in a press conference before City’s EFL Cup quarter-final against Brentford that Doku’s likely destination is Sunderland. The team will also be without John Stones and Rodri, while Omar Marmouche and Rayan Ait Nouri leave for the African Cup of Nations.

Despite a relatively small number of matches coming up, Doku’s absence is significant. City’s upcoming Premier League fixtures include a home game against West Ham and an away match against a strong Nottingham Forest side, where creativity from wingers will be crucial. Any additional setbacks would pose challenges for City. They will head to the Stadium of Light on January 1 and then face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium shortly after.

Doku leads the Premier League this season in chances created per 90 minutes, at 3.44, and trails only Bruno Fernandes in total contributions. His impressive performance is bolstered by his role in assisting Erling Haaland, having set up nine of the striker’s 59 shots in the league—more than any other player on the team. Doku humorously remarked last month, “Haaland eats goals, and I’m his chef.”

Remarkably, City managed to score three goals without Doku against Crystal Palace, with Rayan Cherki continuing to rise in form and Phil Foden stepping up despite not having impressed Guardiola. Although Sabinho and Oscar Bobb, who has limited experience, are poised to fill gaps in the squad, Guardiola faces fewer attacking options without Doku and Marmouche.

For Wednesday’s EFL Cup quarter-finals, both Sabinho and Bobb may feature in the lineup as Guardiola seeks to secure a fourth consecutive EFL Cup title. He emphasized that players who haven’t featured recently, along with academy members, will be given opportunities. After a heavy rotation leading to a disappointing loss against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, Guardiola acknowledged the need to prioritize reaching the EFL Cup semi-finals while managing squad health.

Guardiola noted the absence of a “father figure” on the pitch, highlighting the importance of leadership beyond skill for younger players. He pointed out the balance needed, stating, “It’s a lesson. I have to learn it.”

Young goalkeeper James Trafford, sidelined for over a month, is expected to remain with the team despite interest from Tottenham, West Ham, and Newcastle. Guardiola praised Trafford’s capabilities, stating he is a “great keeper” and foreseeing his continued presence this season.
