Kim Ha-sung Secures One-Year, $20 Million Deal to Rejoin the Braves as Infielder

The Atlanta Braves have re-signed shortstop Ha-Sung Kim to a one-year deal worth $20 million, fulfilling one of their main offseason objectives. Kim’s new contract represents a $4 million raise after he turned down a $16 million player option on a previous two-year, $29 million contract with Tampa Bay, which included a $13 million signing bonus. The Braves made the announcement Monday night.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos revealed that discussions for a long-term contract occurred before settling on the one-year deal, expressing hope for a lasting partnership with Kim. The 30-year-old South Korean player, who struggled to start his season due to right shoulder surgery, hit .234 with five home runs and 17 RBIs for both the Rays and Braves before his September release.

Anthopoulos emphasized confidence in Kim’s improved performance, pointing to his 2025 stats. Over his career spanning San Diego (2021-24), Tampa Bay (2025), and Atlanta, Kim maintains a batting average of .242 with 52 home runs and 217 RBIs. The Braves expect Kim to reach his previous productivity levels seen during his time with the Padres.

Anthopoulos is optimistic that Kim’s return will benefit both parties, allowing Kim to have a strong 2026 season and increase his value for a future multi-year contract. The Braves designated right-handed pitcher Osvaldo Bido for a roster spot.

With Kim back, Mauricio Dubon, recently acquired from Houston, is expected to serve in a utility role rather than as the starting shortstop. Dubon, 31, played in 133 games last season and won two Gold Glove Awards as a utility infielder in 2022 and 2023.

Kim’s return follows the Braves’ agreement with outfielder Mike Yastrzemski on a two-year, $23 million contract, including a team option for 2028, totaling $26 million over three years. Additionally, Atlanta signed two-time All-Star reliever Robert Suarez to a three-year, $45 million contract this week, marking a busy offseason for the team.

Fan Take: This signing signals the Braves’ commitment to blending experience and talent as they aim for sustained success. For baseball fans, Kim’s return adds depth and veteran leadership, setting the stage for an exciting season and potentially impacting the team’s trajectory in the league.
